Office 365 is a robust service that hosts e-mail and data for all faculty, staff and students of Butte College. Office 365 is more secure than the service Butte College could provide in a locally hosted environment.
Office 365 maintains the latest defenses against viruses and spam with Forefront® Online Protection for Exchange, a service that handles over 150 million messages to 8.5 million users around the world every day and is updated to address new virus and spam threats as soon as they appear. Microsoft helps to safeguard your data by hosting it in geographically-distributed data centers, with continuous data backup and premier disaster recovery capabilities.
Electronic communication, including e-mail, is vulnerable to access by unauthorized parties in transmission and in storage. It is recommended that electronic communication (including e-mail) not be used for sensitive data. While Office 365 itself has the necessary controls for handling of sensitive information, the receiving email system and network must also be secure for the data to be fully protected.
Microsoft is consistently and proactively working toward earning your trust by focusing on the following Office 365 trust principles.
Your privacy matters - Your data belongs to you. Microsoft does not scan emails and documents to create advertisement products.
Independently verified - Microsoft Office 365 is compliant with world-class industry standards, including ISO 27001, EU Model clauses, HIPAA BAA, and FISMA, and it is verified by third-party auditors.
Leadership in transparency - Office 365 customers know where major Office 365 data centers are located, who can access that data, and under what circumstances that data can be accessed.
Relentless on security - Office 365 offers robust built-in security features for all customers and optional controls that enable customers to customize their security preferences.
